The Marangu Route is one of the most popular paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its gradual slopes and comfortable hut accommodations, this route is ideal for trekkers seeking a less rugged experience while still enjoying diverse landscapes—from rainforests to moorlands and the spectacular Kibo Crater.
FULL ITINERARY
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Elevation: 1,860m to 2,720m Hiking Time: 3–5 hours Begin your trek at Marangu Gate after registration. The trail ascends through the lush rainforest where you may spot blue monkeys and colobus monkeys. The path is well-maintained and scenic, leading to Mandara Hut. In the afternoon, you can take a short walk to Maundi Crater for excellent views of Northern Tanzania and Kenya.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Elevation: 2,720m to 3,720m Hiking Time: 5–7 hours Hike through the last stretch of the rainforest and into the moorland zone. The scenic trail offers great views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Horombo Hut sits in a spectacular valley with giant groundsel and lobelia vegetation.

Day 3: Acclimatization at Horombo Hut
Spend this day acclimatizing to the altitude. You may hike to Zebra Rocks (about 4,000m), known for its unique striped volcanic formations. This extra day greatly increases your chances of reaching the summit.

Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Elevation: 3,720m to 4,700m Hiking Time: 5–6 hours Cross the alpine desert as you ascend toward Kibo Hut. The landscape is barren yet breathtaking with sweeping views of the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The afternoon is for rest and early dinner, preparing for the summit attempt.

Day 5: Summit Day – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, then down to Horombo Hut
Ascend: 4,700m to 5,895m Descend: 5,895m to 3,720m Hiking Time: 6–8 hours to summit, 5–6 hours to Horombo Start your trek around midnight. The trail to the summit is steep and demanding but rewarding as you reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Enjoy the sunrise over the glaciers and take unforgettable photos. After celebrating at the summit, descend to Kibo for a short rest before continuing to Horombo Hut.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Elevation: 3,720m to 1,860m Hiking Time: 5–7 hours Descend back through the moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. Receive your summit certificates and meet your driver for the transfer back to your hotel.
