Trip Overview
The Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the northern side, close to the Kenyan border. It is known for its gentle gradient, quiet trails, and beautiful wilderness scenery. This route is ideal for climbers looking for a less-crowded path with a high success rate and steady acclimatization. The descent is via the Marangu Route, giving you a full-circle experience of the mountain.
FULL ITINERARY
Day 1: Rongai Gate (1,950m) – Simba Camp (2,600m)
Your adventure begins at Rongai Gate, where you complete registration. The trail climbs gently through pine forests and open landscapes as you ascend to Simba Camp. Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 2: Simba Camp – Second Cave (3,450m) – Kikelelwa Camp (3,600m)
A steady walk brings you to Second Cave for a short rest. The landscape opens up, offering wide views of the plains below and Mawenzi Peak. Continue up to Kikelelwa Camp for the night. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3: Kikelelwa Camp – Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330m)
A short but steep climb leads to the dramatic Mawenzi Tarn, located beneath the towering peaks of Mawenzi. This is one of the most scenic spots on the mountain. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4: HoromDay 4: Acclimatization at Mawenzi Tarnbo Hut to Kibo Hut
This day is dedicated to acclimatization. You’ll hike around the Mawenzi area for better altitude adaptation and return to camp for rest. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Hut (4,703m)
Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, a lunar-like desert landscape. Arrive at Kibo Hut for early dinner and a briefing for the summit attempt. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 6: Summit Day – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Begin your ascent around midnight. The trail is steep but rewarding as you reach Gilman’s Point at sunrise, then proceed to Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa. After celebrating, descend to Kibo Hut for rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 7 (Optional if needed for exit): Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate (1,860m)
Descend through the rainforest to Marangu Gate. Receive your summit certificate and transfer back to your hotel.
